Bernt

Architect Bernt, egl. Bernt Petersen, (1937), Danish architect. Bernt qualified as a cabinet maker from Kunsthåndværkerskolen where he taught in 1973-78. He taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1978-85. From 1963 Bernt had his own design studio where he designed wooden furniture, primarily light woods such as ash and beech. Bernt has always been interested in furniture structures with a clear expression and minimised the use of materials which gives his designs a characteristic, light and elegant look. Think of his Egyptian Stool with the handwoven rattan seat appearing as light a "jewel".

Rud. Rasmussen has presented a wide range of Bernt's classic designs for many years, especially his office furniture. Together with his development of more traditional cabinet making furniture design he has worked in a simple idiomadapted to industrial production and his furniture has been used for theatres and concert halls, amongst others, in many cities in Denmark.

Moreover, Bernt has worked as an architect at exhibitions. He has designed and supported a number of projects, amongst other Fanuc Memorial Hall, Japan; Lego Konference Center; Copenhagen Business School and UN centres in Nairobi.

Bernt has been awarded a number of honorary prizes, including Møbelprisen 1977; Godt Design prize, a Gold medal, Japan 1998.
