Ole Wanscher

Ole Wanscher (1903-1985), Danish architect. Wanscher worked at Kaare Klint's design studio (1925-27), whose genre he became a brilliant, but independent exponent of. Wanscher taught furniture drawing at Kunsthåndværkerskolen in 1931-36 and became a professor at the Furniture School at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. He was a student of Kaare Klint and followed in his footsteps. He shared many of his view points regarding furniture and aesthetics.

Wancher's furniture belongs to the classic Danish modernism with reminiscence from the English and Oriental art of furniture. Wanscher was inspired and possessed a great interest in early furniture to find ideal constructions which he then gave a more modern expression. High quality and careful processing characterize Ole Wancher's design.

One of Ole Wanscher's most well-known masterpieces is the Egyptian Folding Chair which was inspired by an ancient Egyptian chair.

He worked with master cabinetmaker A. J. Iversen for many years and Ole Wanscher designed a number of exclusive types of furniture that are considered Danish design classics. He wrote a series of books about furniture, amongst others Møbelkunsten (1946-55, also published in English, German and Swedish).
